1799 Irish Gravestone Found in Washington Square Park

“Here lies the body of James Jackson who departed this life the 22nd day of September 1799 aged 28 years native of the county of Kildare Ireland.”

So reads the inscription on  a gravestone just discovered during excavation under Washington Square Park.  Historians will be working to learn more about Mr.  Jackson’s life.

    Oh how intersting, I’m from Ireland and my grandmother remarried a Jackson man (both now deceased), and I have evidence of a relation of his serving in the American Army and died in service in World War I, maybe he is a distant relative of this man.

      There are folks who are busy trying to trace the history of this gentleman. Unfortunately, there are not much evidence that has been found about him so far, but hope springs eternal!
